Gary began his career as a freelance illustrator at 27, starting in advertising before moving into publishing. His early work led to illustrating children’s books for major names including Disney, Thomas the Tank Engine, and Noddy. He later worked with DreamWorks, creating illustrations for films such as Captain Underpants, Spirit, Shrek, and Madagascar.
Open-minded in his approach, Gary McNamara experiments with various mediums and techniques to create expressive portraits, valuing the individuality of each subject. Influenced by Middle Eastern culture, he draws inspiration from its vibrancy and flamboyance. His process often begins with experimentation, gradually building form through layered applications.
Blending Far Eastern influences with bold primary colours, Gary McNamara delivers a distinctive and contemporary style within fine art.
